XIAO FENG CAN YUE wants me to tell guys how to drive a turbo car correctly so that everybody can benefit it and identify who is correct and who is a laity but which made so much boring noise. Please see the attachment that tells you how to deal with a TURBO. Do pay attention to BOOST R.M.P, PEAK TOUQUE R.M.P, and PEAK HORSEPOWER R.M.P.

Your turbocharger is engineered to match the specific requirements of the engine it is

think of the turbo as a bolt-on accessory, rather as an integral part of the engine. The
: C! |0 D! V2 \0 U6 l1 Eturbo's requirements are similar to the engine’s. It is, therefore, essential that+ G' A4 Q8 l: U* d( T: \
scheduled servicing, using good quality oils and parts, is central to caring for your/ u$ m* s& Q0 q
turbo.

misdiagnosed as having a turbo problem, when actually the turbo is not at fault.% z# Q- v; j( @7 G5 W7 j$ }
Incorrect fault finding is often caused by a lack of product knowledge. Many
' \: c' v5 Q; b9 x: scontributory items around the engine bay can trick the unsuspecting into believing the
4 \1 F1 y, H1 ?9 p6 C% hturbo is the culprit, when in fact it is not. Unfortunately, if the real problem is not
- N7 `/ H# W9 `) B sdiagnosed before a replacement turbocharger is fitted, the problem still exists!; L% s7 H, e$ |2 x. _
We have a saying at Berrima Diesel which goes, "Turbos don't die. They’re killed". A
' U! `) t# L6 d. b+ Y/ T# eturbo can be killed in many ways.
4 ?/ \# k' \7 ]6 }Foreign object damage results in either the air intake "compressor wheel" or exhaust
4 Q- O v" K# Q& o/ m1 q% V) w+ k"turbine" wheel being damaged. The former is often caused by someone accidentally
1 P! O9 y: w" a; aleaving a nut or other foreign body in the air induction hoses. Please be extremely$ _* @5 V3 }4 l/ m& `- A+ c
careful if going to an aftermarket air-filter. Genuine is bests there! In the latter case,1 v: l2 h/ i4 I* j
this may be caused by part of an engine component, such as a piece of valve, exiting
0 r" t. v& q* e ^! l1 dthe engine in rather a hurry! In both cases it results in severe turbocharger damage
8 ]2 X% ^3 \" [% t, S# E1 ninstantly.2 N+ L5 E& Y2 M z5 S3 K' s8 I c
Turbochargers are simple in operation, but manufactured to precise tolerances as fine/ `% q; ~* _+ I$ i" i$ G. o
as 1/ 1,000,000 of an inch. The turbo unit manufacturers balance and test every single
. f" ]# x( j9 z. ]turbocharger many times, including final assembly. The balancing methods and
8 U/ b4 d' \& f6 G7 }9 ?* q2 `2 k) |# gprocedures are unique. Without them, no turbocharger can be balanced to the ultrafine \& j$ X3 H# R$ e. O! f
tolerances required for today’s high speed turbos. It is now common for
0 C" `& O* n3 Y) xturbochargers to spin up to 150,000 rpm +.9 W+ i; q! t# Z2 @: P
That’s approximately 35 times faster than most diesel engines rev at the red line!
4 C3 n3 H& l f5 H* XSophisticated machinery and highly trained factory staff ensure that the highest& Y7 T0 s; o$ x5 m5 E/ ^8 H
standards are always maintained.* u; x# g9 P+ E+ w' q# }
Useful tips when driving any turbocharged engine, whether it be petrol or diesel, are
# v8 r* R+ ]- A1 Vto always allow the engine to warm-up fully, until the water temperature gauge' o7 R0 @5 z0 a' L1 }
reaches normal, before full throttle is used. Try to plan the end of your journey" [9 y3 u l- p- V% n
sympathetically. Don’t use full throttle or allow the engine to labour during the last
* H6 J$ Z3 _' @. l7 q$ k J1 I# Vfew miles. This will prevent excessive heat build-up within the turbo when the engine
* z. Q5 H; }4 y. @/ _is turned off. Also, when coming to a standstill, try to leave the engine idling for a
& J# V t0 _, o+ i+ P* Tfew extra seconds to allow the heat to decrease. No need for a timer though, just undo
. n; O6 H; [/ e9 L2 Q1 \your seat belt first and then turn off the engine. Never rev the engine just as the$ [" Q+ a' Z' A& @/ c: I7 J1 L* @
ignition is turned off. Remember the turbo spins at a far greater speed then the! C2 z# c: n, J7 O4 T* o
engine, but is lubricated with engine oil. Once the engine stops the oil supply ceases2 \. y7 {7 K0 V2 p
within a few seconds. In reality, none of the above traits will cause a turbocharger to
( M/ u6 P; }# T8 h/ W' J0 I2 Rfail immediately, but repeatedly over a long period, they could reduce the life of your
7 N. b4 A2 F0 T% J0 m8 k2 zturbocharger.

that your short-term saving may turn out to be a long-term nightmare.
_5 K" `* B( EWhat is 'Boost'?
6 G' c, j+ T2 C$ P' \" S( W" N6 mBoost is a term used to describe the increase in pressure, provided by the
X) e) g( u8 M6 k6 sturbocharger, to the volume of air, entering the engine. This pressure is expressed in, ^1 j$ |* D* d2 y/ C
a number of different units, (BAR, ATM, Kpa, P.S.I.), but they all mean the same/ M& s0 \5 A/ }( T7 v& b
thing. For purposes of approximate comparison; 1 BAR = 1 ATM = 100 Kpa
4 a" S K( W; g: C14.7P.S.1. When the pressure of the engine's inlet air is increased, the engine's power
7 l6 M! m* q9 W' u1 t1 P! Noutput is increased. This pressure increase is called 'boost'.
1 V3 c5 v" i8 vHow does fitting a Dynamic Turbosystem effect the power of my! j% ^2 p0 [1 [& H* d& t' b- H
vehicle?' y1 S+ X& U( }6 `" m
Modern 4WD diesel engines, typically produce peak torque (pulling power), at6 E+ g {6 e% I' }5 Z1 `/ v
around 2,000-2,500 R.P.M. and peak horsepower at around 3,500-4,000 R.P.M.2 ~/ w7 f+ z2 d8 W$ ]. y
Turbo boost starts at approximately 750 R.P.M. and rises progressively to its
! M) ^7 B; d. Q" [, H5 B! zmaximum pressure of approx. 70 Kpa (10 P.S.I.) by approx. 2,000 R.P.M. At this8 [. f0 Q) z; j5 ^5 n- @
point, the percentage torque increase of a correctly tuned installation is approx. 40%,
7 K, v. X/ z0 f; v7 A- \at the wheels. This continues to the peak horsepower point of 3,500-4,000 R.P.M. At/ D H4 ^6 X' x" L: R
no point is it ever any less than standard. e.g. at 1500 R.P.M. it is at least 25% greater u& Q7 r4 z, X( {! h' g
than the standard vehicle at the same R.P.M.* Y& e3 X7 p: n4 A# v( o, B
Can I fit a Dynamic Turbosystem myself and, if not, how long and; ] [& o- a" [4 ] Q' F9 N4 x9 T
what is the cost of having it fitted for me ?
2 M/ I6 o! p) S9 IWhile most competent mechanics could probably fit a Dynamic Turbosystem,
" u3 }! h8 b# g$ F5 R# |tuning requires specialised knowledge. The lack of this knowledge could have
* ~3 S# O& [+ J! C. U6 aserious consequences. In addition, warranty can only be provided on Dynamic1 n! @% {; z, J) M& K
Turbosystems which are installed by authorised facilities.

What creates the most heat? Fuel or turbo boost?

requiring a butterfly are vacuum operated governor pumps) to operate. The more air+ C$ E6 M5 W7 D" o1 |5 q7 E
the better. Add too much fuel to the equation and the exhaust gas temperature

What type of oil and how often should it be changed ?
8 F9 h7 o* P3 R. Z5 v- ?4 STurbos must have good quality oil. Use either a mineral, semi or fully-synthetic* l' F' f# J4 R! T% ^8 h# R
engine oil. Berrima Diesel recommends Shell Rimula range or Shell Helix Ultra .

How long does a turbo last ?/ A( G# @' ]& @* D V
On average, as long as the engine or longer with regular engine servicing and good8 D, h i9 O6 N
quality engine oil.
( |- S0 f5 C' w1 U9 E AWhat is a ‘dump’ valve or ‘blow-off‘ valve ?
3 f% k! \& U) B( iA valve which relieves boost-pressure between the compressor outlet and engine as
6 h& [% F; E: x! U0 Pthe throttle is closed (Only required on throttle valve controlled diesels which are) C6 g# S# o5 |( R# o
rarely seen these days). These are commonly fitted to hotted up petrol cars so it
% K( t/ v* X7 W. Y- K! ?sounds good changing gears among other reasons!( {& z& m$ S9 u
Can I fit a turbo from another 4WD ?
y% B+ }/ M5 INo, virtually all turbocharger are different inside, even if they appear similar on the9 J A% L8 _& p& P% F
outside. The turbo model e.g. Mitsubishi TD04, is only the model, not the* K( i- B1 H& \: e3 u
specification.

Not for normal every day driving, but still worthwhile if the engine has been under

Without highly accurate balancing, vibration will create a whining noise, reduce

Correctly set up diesel 4WD turbochargers run up to between 10 PSI to12 PSI with
% r% N; A1 q9 ^9 M8 q6 KIntercooler turbocharged engines running upwards of 13PSI.

Should a turbo be serviced ?. J4 W6 ^3 U5 n2 h) S
No specific turbo servicing is required, but regular quality engine servicing is needed

What is a water-cooled turbo ?4 Y+ s; q+ w- e q, g
The central part of the turbo, housing the bearings, is surrounded by a water jacket
3 @/ s1 u2 @) O; j* i, nthrough which the engine's water coolant is passed. This water continues to circulate; {( M$ S% }$ `- K/ J* A
after the engine is turned off, cooling the turbo, and preventing heat soak.2 t2 N( l! I$ N7 G. O
Do I need to up grade my exhaust ?
" D7 h( t( }) @7 QGenerally not. Our systems are designed to run utilising as much genuine component8 Y5 X8 n5 ~& W. j5 e/ K8 f
as possible. Some systems on the market promote exhaust change as it is required by* ~# {( F, w/ {/ w
that particular turbo. Doing so usually picks up more noise than performance.

Only an unbalanced, worn out or damaged turbo will produce any significant turbo' |! d8 s7 I0 e2 u1 m% b
noise.
+ Y: `* `# [ _; uWhat is an intercooler ?
P1 p5 S) k4 C! k1 s8 ?; j' BA special type of radiator which cools air before it enters the engine. As a turbo6 ]& ^/ U8 O$ x; C
compresses air, the air heats up. Power can be increased if the air entering the engine
+ K& [! l+ A3 B( ais cooler. The cooler air is more dense meaning that more fuel can be injected for/ X* n8 D7 \& [# H" P
more power.$ k1 F G! Q1 m; V! o) h3 F; I
Will my vehicle run ‘cooler’ with an intercooler ?
) O% U! x7 Z5 S# p) w7 l1 ATheoretically, but not always the case! We commonly find Intercooled 4WD vehicles! Q: ^( J5 U/ l, h
running hot due to over-fuelling and radiator restriction. Restriction meaning that hot/ l& w' L+ h+ o
air passes out of the Intercooler over the air conditioning condenser and finally the
% W8 P) B. N* Rradiator. The poor old radiator is left with scraps of extremely hot air and then is
- G8 x' c0 @! K/ ]; G kexpected to cool the engine. We don’t advise fitting them as hot Australian conditions
6 S( F& C$ [5 F& ?9 [3 c# [3 Xcan often be the catalyst for engine heat problems.
