Why wear a poppy

And held one forth, but I shook my head
) V# M" f5 ]; f& uThen I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare 5 V! c, A6 D1 _7 I
Her face was old, and lined with care, 3 g6 _* `) r' j; h) x) m
Yet beneath the scars, the years had made " p: p" w( ?0 l
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
1 ~( Z9 C, O, [9 S1 u" r7 K; t8 Z8 n6 p0 Z# n
A boy came whistling down the street
' b% j! [: {4 a& q, B- B9 mBounding along on his carefree feet
& m3 e: C+ V9 j4 i: I. U$ p6 bHis smile was full of joy and fun
& d& ^, d7 l" E6 ~9 Z9 ` “Lady” he said, “can I have one?
( Z4 P8 j: `1 p6 i, g, i! qAs she pinned it on I heard him say 2 g2 v1 J! t8 P9 N, A. V
“Why do we wear the poppy today?” + `( K/ x- y# C
The lady smiled in her wistful way
! {1 `0 _8 }, `And answered “this is remembrance day”
" {. r. D4 P- u8 P
$ M) C% Y% S, Z1 n“The poppy is the symbol for the,
* w: F  G3 k# }" wThe gallant men and women who died in the war”.
% J& s) C  N3 q% P# x “And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see” ) a+ T9 a* |( K* ?( m- w8 K+ l
% h+ \3 `' E  i! h6 `
“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes,
# {1 E6 b. u( e' w/ M9 k6 W2 ^0 X8 F# v% QHe loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about” 7 E6 @9 Q( `" _; l" q  a. o0 D
As the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”, % _7 z7 t4 |; ?& j
He was fine and strong with a boyish smile, " M: `: ~' v  A2 s7 U1 w
But he seemed to be with us a such a short while ! w/ M  C' y* a
When the War broke out he went away ; o- |- m+ A# Y
I can still remember his face that day ( j5 U" _; R3 a- t/ \; R
When he smiled at me and said goodbye
9 ~; n2 _, t9 {: D, V“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry”
1 E! q' o* y+ }% a3 M- R: q
) D) x% A, K+ f! B) C9 c2 i; gBut the War went on and he had to stay
% R. r- b# Y  t( U9 R. [All I could do was wait and pray & z( y9 {% O# `. i, z; I1 [/ b( v! E
His letters told of an awful fight & n' W8 Y0 a* f4 N  t
I can see it still in my dreams at night 3 ^; }& @/ O( h
With the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire 5 p, S8 g- Z' _! i3 y
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire
) a- k# G6 ?5 u2 s# |Until at last the War was won 7 s) y* B/ r* A6 H
And that is why we wear the poppy son   F. f$ H! ]3 M

( o7 B. ~2 u  e8 XThe small boy turned as if to go
. i, b+ C1 x: }' Y. eThen stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know” . b) N8 r$ J1 d' ?. o7 ?+ x2 R
That sure did sound like an awful fight9 `# n5 J6 N' w/ p( D6 n
“But your son, did he come home all right”? 1 o2 ~6 v8 _8 ]2 ?
A tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head
6 _) k7 ], Y& [4 ZBut didn’t speak.
  Q2 e( y- p+ j2 R: v) J0 D
3 @: q  Z9 \( D4 p5 Z3 Q" aI slunk away, head bowed in shame,
7 J# `2 v. g  t" I! }, t+ W4 |And if you were me, you’d have done the same,
& ^7 q1 b7 Z) N- G$ WFor our thanks in giving is often delayed
7 r! U/ d. m/ iThough our freedom was bought by the legions who paid. / {( ?: h% x! }/ |

3 }! p! ?* _& d) e$ e: vAnd so, when you see a poppy worn $ g* g. x4 u. [, s) B
Let us reflect on the burden borne
- e/ f: i* B* V/ OBy those who gave their precious all ; ~" T4 T$ X1 }. O9 W) R
When asked to answer their countries call
0 n  Z1 n4 s, \That we at home, in peace may live
9 [- J* ]+ {8 S$ o" ^7 ?" zThen wear a poppy, remember, and give.
