The Government of Canada recognizes that education after high school is the greatest investment Canadians can make for children. It can help open doors to a world of opportunities. The Government can help you save, so that children can get the right education, skills and training to find good jobs.

( p7 Q5 }# p0 c# ACelebrate Education Savings Week with us and help raise awareness about the importance of saving for a child’s education after high school. You don't have to be the child's parent; family members and friends can also put aside money for a child’s education. Saving early—even a little at a time—can make a big difference.

November is also Financial Literacy Month in Canada, featuring activities to help Canadians improve their financial literacy. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) website is a great resource to find events, tools and information related to financial literacy.

The Canada Learning Bond is available to children who were born after December 31, 2003 and whose families receive the National Child Benefit Supplement. (The Supplement is over and above the Canada Child Tax Benefit and is usually received by lower-income families.)
% @5 K% O1 l  A0 f7 I$ z
; V1 U8 z0 q/ r/ F& mIf you are not sure whether you receive the National Child Benefit Supplement, consult your Canada Child Tax Benefit Notice of Determination. If you are the primary caregiver, you can also visit "My Account" - available through the Canada Revenue Agency Web site or by calling the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281.
1 `5 H; Y. X/ ^% b4 T; g3 f1 `+ l& C1 f: O
The national child benefit supplement (NCBS) is intended for low-income families with children. Therefore, the maximum is paid only if family net income is less than $25,584. It is reduced by a percentage amount (which depends on the number of children) when family net income is more than $25,584. Families with three or less children and family net income between $25,584 and $43,000 will receive partial NCBS. Families with four or more children will still receive some NCBS if their family net income is less than $49,000.

No contributions (except transfers from another RESP) may be made to the plan at any time after the end of the year that includes the 31st anniversary of the opening of the plan.- }; H& B' P$ B

. `$ M% m& T: J. `Every child under age 18 who is a Canadian resident will accumulate $400 (for 1998 to 2006) and $500 (from 2007 and subsequent) of CESG contribution room. 3 S* h: S% i$ y3 H4 U9 ]+ ^: S0 A
Unused CESG contribution room is carried forward and used when RESP contributions are made in future years provided that the specific contribution requirements for beneficiaries who attain 16 or 17 years of age are met. ( n+ K1 @$ b5 e: G: H# o( P
Beneficiaries qualify for a grant on the contributions made on their behalf up to the end of the calendar year in which they turn 17 years of age.9 V2 I: x- O2 @! E

8 X8 ~2 D5 E  fFor example: If you start an account for your six-year-old child, you can contribute $2,500 (this year’s contribution room) plus another $2,500 (from previously unused contribution room) for a total of $5,000, to receive a grant of $1,000. You are allowed to contribute more than $5,000 in this scenario, but there will be no grant paid on the amount above $5,000. When calculating contribution room carryover from past years, don’t forget that the contribution limit was only $2,000 prior to 2007.
